What I have learnt from making my prototype...and things that will need changing.

Yesterday we showed the prototypes to Adele and the rest of the Moving Tides Student group (26/04/2012), and today we tried them outside. From seeing my prototype on someone else, seeing it react in the wind and the process of making my prototype,
I have learnt a few things...

  • The gems on the t-shirt will have to be ironed onto the front of the t-shirt- the back is not seen as much, not too many on the arms and not too low down as the drums will be covering them.
  • The Plasterzote was going to be given to the children to cut out using a template, but, because they have to be fitted so tightly on the Plasterzote sheets I think it would be easier and less mistake making if I just did it myself and took it in.
  • There will have to be something 'weighty' on the bottom of the fins as the wind blows them about which could be a little irritating- maybe plating the net and orange fabric scraps together could be stapled on the bottom?
  • The marker pen is great on the lining fabric for the fins- no bleeding or smudging so I can go ahead and draw on all the fins once they have been painted and decorated.
  • The painting on the front of the mask part of the headdress will have to have strong outlines otherwise it is lost in the distance.
  • The bells really liven up the whole costume, and I think the children will Love them!
  • The more circles on the ends of the headdress spikes the better.
  • Adding dark green circles into the laminate headdress sheets has a better variation in colour to just the bright green and purple.
  • Need to laminate glitter into the headdress sheets for the children's costumes.
  • Maybe add glitter on the mask too- but I don't want it to go in their eyes, so I need to 'give it a go' on the prototype.
  • Try and make the fins as bright as possible- as I didn't think the prototype was quite bright enough. But one of my paints were missing so the actual colour will be a little different when it arrives Wednesday + hopefully there will be a higher paint to water ratio on the real one's- I just didn't want to waste too much paint.

Making the Prototype

Fins
Painting the fins- using the textile paint was really easy to blend the two colours together.
*From this technique I can teach the children what the word blend is, and how to do it with paint.
I want the scalloped edges to be yellow and the main base to be orange. This will give them more depth and more realistic to the Fire Fish, rather than be one solid block of colour.
I was really surprised at the drying time. It only took 15-20mins for them to dry out. This means it shouldn't make too much mess in the classroom and hopefully it will mean we will be able to move onto other things.

   Headdress
Once all the separate parts were made and cut out it was really quick putting them all together.
By making two separate templates I can take them into the school and stick them up around the classroom so the children can choose which one and copy it onto the front of the headdress on the mask part. Three colours- green, orange and gold can be used and they can choose how they use the colour.
Again I used the textile paint for the prototype. I also used Watercolour paint. The watercolour paint did not work at all it did not dry so i had to try and wipe it off. Instead i used acrylic paint and though it took longer to dry than the textile paint it was a bold, strong colour which would be waterproof in case the weather was not good on the day.
The Plasterzote is waterproof and lightweight so I used this for the main base and the strands coming off the top of the headdress. These are really bouncy so I will add more on the final headdresses.

The other shapes on the sides were created by cutting out curly wave shapes and sticking bits of green and mauve blobs onto this. They were then laminated and cut out then glue gunned onto the top of the headdress by bending the bottom 1cm to create a base. For the children's headdresses I am going to add glitter into the laminating pouches so that it will be more shiny and hopefully reflective in the sun.

Tie Dye Experimentation Evaluation

I have chosen method three for choice of tie-dye for the t-shirts.
This is because...

  • The colours are bolder- and more vibrant.
  • The T-shirts look overall more orange.
  •  I feel the colours and pattern will look better as a group as there will be more continuity.
  • They are more similar to the patterns on a Red Firefish.

What I have learnt from this process...
  • The bands don't take long at all to put onto the t-shirts so it will be important to have other activities to have ready for the children to do as it won't take all afternoon to do
  • It is important to use a lot of dye to create these bold colours
  • It is important to have more orange in the t-shirts as some of the prototype's I created were too yellow, or two white, and I feel it will look better if it is a group of one block colour with hints of purple and green rather than a mix of many colours.

Cable Ties and Elastic Dying

I am Dying the Cable Ties purple and green dip dyed, and the thick elastic (For the calf's and wrist) Purple.
I am Using...
For the Purple colour:
Kemtex Royal Blue synthetic fabric dye, and Kemtex Fushia Red synthetic fabric dye
Dye Room session to find out the right mix...
2 1/2 tsp Kemtex Fushia Red synthetic fabric dye
1/4 tsp Kemtex Royal Blue synthetic fabric dye
1/2 cup salt
full Large saucepan of water
and for the Green colour:
Kemtex Emerald Green synthetic fabric dye, Kemtex Royal Blue synthetic fabric dye,

Dye Room session to find out the right mix...
1 tsp Kemtex  Emerald Green synthetic fabric dye
1/4 tsp Kemtex Royal Blue synthetic fabric dye
1/2 cup salt
full Large saucepan of water
Leaving the cable ties for different lengths of time's meant that the colours came out slightly different. Which I like this subtle variation. and the dip dying meant that they all came out differently depending how much of the cable tie was dipped.

Tie Dye Experimentation

Today I am trying out two methods for the Tie Dye.
I am planning to use the colours simply- straight from the can but rather than using only orange I would like to incorporate yellow, and red into the t-shirts to make them bolder in colour. I have bought A LOT of Dye! This is so the colours produced are really vibrant. I don't want any 'wishy washy' colours in my group!
I am using Dylon dye as the t-shirts are going to be cotton so this is the best dye for this. Golden Glow (yellow) Tangerine (orange) Cherry Flame (red)
I may change the red dye to the scarlet depending on today's results.
Originally I was going to get the children to dye the t-shirts themselves but time and money has meant that I was going to use Cold water dyes, I am now using Dylon.

Both- I want stripes horizontally across the t-shirt like the pattern's on a fire fish. I want the stripes to be all the way to the top with the collar and sleeves stripy all the way to the bottom. Though the children will choose where they want their stripes I hope they all will look the same as a group.

Method 1. Dye the whole T-shirt yellow first- wait until dry. Then tie the t-shirts up in elastic bands.
Dye the t-shirt orange then dip dye the top and bottom 2 inches red.

Method 2. Tie up the whole t-shirt in elastic bands in the stripy style with no base colour. Then dip dye. yellow at the bottom, orange in the middle (the majority of the t-shirt), and then red at the top.

Method 3. Dye the t-shirt a base colour of pale orange then tie up the t-shirt with sets of three elastic bands then a bigger space so that it is more alike to the patterns on a Firefish.  Then dye the whole t-shirt a bright orange then add red to the mix to make a burnt orange colour and dip dye the top and bottom with this then add more red for the last inch of the top and bottom.

Second draft of lesson plans

This is my second draft. I will be now sending it off to my teacher. She will have to make sure it is suitable for the children to do. Once I have made my prototype it could alter what I will be doing with the children.
