DESCRIPTION:

For my project, I am going to be working alongside a school in Weymouth, initially researching, designing, experimenting and then prototyping a costume based on this year’s theme; ‘Oceans of the world’ which I will then help instruct a class of children to make their own costume. The costumes will become part of a carnival procession taking place in July, in Weymouth, called ‘Moving Tides Carnival’, which is part of the bigger ‘Maritime Mix’ a mass of events funded by the Arts council celebrating the location as the 2nd largest venue outside the capital as host to the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic sailing.
Throughout this project I will Experiment with materials to create eye-catching large scale pieces suitable for a carnival. Workshops in a range of materials such as Willow, Plastazote, Batik and materials found cheaply at the scrap store shown to us by visiting artist’s will be trialled to see if it is suitable medium to make my 2D design become 3D and will help me achieve my project aims. I will be working on a tight budget; as there in a £10 limit per costume, so it will be important to keep updating amount’s spent and focus on buying as cheap materials as possible. I will work alongside the make-up department for continuity to continue the design onto their faces and make the children really ‘get into character’ this will further the look for the final procession. For assessment, I will be able to hand in my experiments, a series of prototype’s, and a final prototype of the finished costume to demonstrate to the children what they should be making, my sketchbook with research, designs, and design development and my blog; which will be a online written workbook of the steps, process’s and reflections from meetings and tutorials with tutors and Moving Tides organisers. I will also produce a written evaluation how successful the project was overall, and what I have achieved and learnt from undertaking it.
I chose this project over the other’s for ‘Self Directed Project because I love working with children and have previous experience working with different age groups which I found challenging and fulfilling.
The scope of the project allows me to combine both design and making, which enables me to extend and progress in both areas.
I liked the idea of producing and planning creative and fun designs. I have always swayed towards designing animal and make-believe costume since deciding Costume was my chosen career aspiration, such as designing ‘Tiddalik the Frog’ (a book about an Australian frog who drinks all the water until there are droughts) costumes in my application to get onto the course in Bournemouth.   Since choosing ‘making’ as my specialist subject I have missed being at the ideas side of costume. I will enjoy using my imagination and showing my creativity within the sea theme. Using unusual materials; to keep budgets low, develops my interest and enables me to extend and explore new materials and expand my knowledge in their use.
The Olympics in the UK is a huge and amazing once in a lifetime experience. The Moving Tides Torch Relay carnival is such a wonderful opportunity to be part of a huge event. For the children it will be such a memorable experience and one in which I can give a positive and proactive part and provide a contribution to this fulfilling opportunity.
