Carnival Research

What I have learnt from my Carnival Research-What makes a costume effective for a carnival?...

  • Block colour is very effective- You don't need lots of different colours on the costume to make it stand out.
  • Keep it simple. You won’t see little details. Keep the shape bold and simple. Simple ideas often have a strong visual impact
  • Make it easily recognisable of the creature/plant
  • Carnival costumes work best when there is movement. Makes the costume come to life -feathers and silks move well for carnivals.
  • Make it Very bright - doesn't matter if it is not your usual taste!
  • Reflective materials are good. As carnivals are outside the sun (hopefully on the 12th July!) make the costumes stand out and catch people's eye.
  • Height -Can see from far away. Headdresses often help give the costume some height.  Remember to keep it lightweight.
  • Fun...silly! Carnivals originally were something enjoyed by a lower class society so you can make it out of anything. Nothing too serious!
Other things to think about...
  • Practical, quick to put on but visually strong
