Weymouth Visit- Viewing Costume from previous years

Last week we went to Weymouth to look at past costumes and to meet some of the people involved in Moving Tides at the storage warehouse. This was  a real help as it enabled us to get a idea on size, materials, colour, weight, and ways in which the costumes can be made for a group (either one massive costume, a few large scale pieces, or a whole group of separate costumes) and see what ideas had been used in previous years.

See photos below of the past costumes

Kraken- sea monster

Vac formed painted with poster paint, cable ties hold it together.

Brass paper fasteners for decoration. A string of tie-dye legs around the neck on a string.
Jellyfish

Made out of a willow structure. Covered in tissue paper. Lots of glue on top to make it shower proof and stronger

 Shrimp like creatures
Premade, then kids decorate. 4 made between groups. Large held on stick.
Jellyfish

Umbrellas and willow covered structures. Readymade then decorated by the children

 Sea monster
Head Plaster cast part of a larger costume with hoops joined in a group costume
Fish

Papier-mâché- they were too heavy

 Lady
Based on work of a famous Artist. The problem with this piece was that the balance was completely off and the weight wasn't centred so it was easily breakable.

Bird mask- two part mask beak and jaw
Vac formed with glitter, feathers and beads

Shells with bells on a willow stick
Shell shape- bells on it. Made out of willow, bamboo stick and scraps of fabric
Birds on a carbon fibre pole- spun in the wind
Bright coloured birds on a carbon fibre tent pole. Vac formed then painted. Worked like a seaside windmill; they spun in the wind.

Seagull on the hat

Vac formed and Modrock on a plastic hat, then painted.

Masks
Vac formed shells decorated with beads on a chain and sequins which was accompanied by a Tabard in a simple shell shape.

Headband
Headbands are good for keeping something lightweight on the head.
Paper bag circles on a wooden stick
